Explaining Our Maths

This week in maths we have been practicing counting up and over 100. In buddies we took a collection of items and had to work out how many things there were. We counted up in a range of ways including 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s. Watch and listen to our thinking below.

A & P Show

We spent Friday morning being creative. We decorated biscuits, sand saucers and made a fruit and vege creation. It was so much fun. Thank you to all those parents that helped transport our stuff down to the show grounds.

Snakes and Ladders

Today in maths we played Snakes and Ladders or Ropes and Rockets. Instead of using one die we used two dice. We practiced our doubles, counting on from the biggest number and our basic facts. This is a fun game we could play at home over the holidays :-)

Discovery

In Discovery this week some children had a go at making  plastic bag balls, an idea inspired by Paul who came and gave a very interesting talk about growing up in a Kenyan village. He explained that children in the villages couldn't just go to a shop and buy a new ball, they had to be creative and make their own with whatever suitable materials they could find- plastic bags, old clothes, string.
Paul, if you are reading this, I hope you are impressed by our efforts.....it wasn't as easy as you made it look but what a great lesson on perseverance!
We also had dress ups, fan making, dragon art. Our photographers each week try to catch moments where they see children demonstrating our current life skill focus, so see if you can spot students relating well to each other!

Mazes

In maths we have been learning about mazes. Last week we planned a maze on paper and this week we went outside and created our mazes with chalk. It was quite tricky having to transfer what we had on our plan onto the tennis court.
It was really fun (and sometimes tricky)  navigating our way through other class member's mazes.

Fun Friday

On Fridays we are learning about coding. We have also made this part of maths. Today we were learning to use the language of direction. In groups we focused on being able  to describe a path through a maze. We were using words such as; move forward, move back, turn left and turn right. It was lots of fun creating our own mazes in class.

Friday Rich Maths Fun

Butterfly Flowers and Nim 7 from Hope School on Vimeo.

We had to pair up our butterflies so their total would be the same as one of the flowers. We became very good at using a 10 plus and other number to make a teen number.

We also played a 2 player game called Nim 7. It is a basic form of the ancient game of Nim. We needed 7 objects. We placed the 7 objects in a pile and decided who went first. (In the next game the other person went first) Each player took a turn to take away either one or two counters. The player who won was the player who took the last counter.

Some of us came up with some winning strategies.

I wonder what would happen if we started with more counters?

Quick Discovery

We had a quick discovery today as we were heading to Wakefield Pool for a swimming session.
We really enjoyed using the magnets to move around the cars, making cards, balancing balloons and building with the blocks.

Rocky Shore Creatures Visit Hope School

John Campbell; from the Nelson Museum; came out to Hope School with a small collection of rock pool creatures from Cable Bay. We learned how we should handle the creatures safely when we visit on Friday.
John also shared how Cable Bay got its name. There was a cable connected from Australia to Cable Bay' which allowed people to start sending telegrams. They also used morse code. We had a go using morse code with some of the equipment John brought in.
